The Phone Book

House-Demons (v4.0)
by Maria Donovan

When Gareth got his own place the housedemon hopped into a shoe and went with him. In his new home the demon summoned fluff, which soon gathered thick as sheep's wool on the carpet. The rooms were hung with old spider's webs and the cooker sprayed with gobbets of oil and a fine red spit, the colour of tinned tomatoes. But the fairy who cleans the toilet stayed at the old house, with the ex-housemates. While Gareth was sleeping the demon whispered, "Get a girlfriend. Get a girlfriend." The girlfriend brought a demon of her own, a juicy female who scattered used tissues on the floor and left long hairs in the bath. Gareth's demon was smitten. Gareth was disappointed because his new girl said she didn't believe in the toilet fairy. But they stayed together for some time, if only for the sake of the demons.
