I bought a toy mobile phone. If you press the green button it rings, just like a real phone. This morning I made it ring while I stood on a packed tube train, which had come to a halt deep underground. For fifteen minutes I laughed and joked with an imaginary person. "I'll see you tonight," I finished. "I love you, too." People must have known what I was about. They must have known that no-one can get phone coverage underground. And if they'd known me, they'd know that nobody could ever love me.
